Square wave:
With a very simple and affordable system comes square wave offline UPS which proffers adjunct time to save the data, which may be lost in case of mains failure. The working of the system: When mains are present, the load is supplied directly by the mains as also the battery is being charged simultaneously. The supply being directly fed to the load the supply is not legitimate though. The charger involved in this is very simple as also of low current rating. The batteries are of low AH. The backup provided by offline UPS being far less than an inverter; hence a half bridge inverter is employed in this system which includes MOSFETs. This system generates square waveforms, which is fed to the load. This system is not recommended when higher backup is desirable. Square wave offline UPS is not compatible for server loads. In case of mains failure, the changeover relay switches the supply to the load from mains to inverter (which is in turn fed by the batteries). The time taken for this is < 20ms, which is termed as changeover time. If the time exceeds 20ms the computer will reboot. Bi-directional off-line system: In this system, no separate charger is involved; rather, the inverter section itself acts as a charger in reverse direction, hence is the name.

Sine wave offline UPS:
This system being similar to the square wave offline UPS, the only difference lies in the inverter technology. A full-bridge inverter is employed unlike square-wave UPS. This system generates sine wave which is compatible for server loads. Consequently, this system facilitates higher backup. This may be a bi-directional off-line system.
Line Interactive off-line UPS:
This is an intermediate system. This system involves AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator). The load being fed with an interminable supply through AVR, make the system more efficient as compared to sine & square wave offline UPS.
